On Friday, June 12th, Big Lots officially celebrated the grand opening of their new Martin City store with a ribbon cutting ceremony and a big surprise for two lucky area schools. Leadership from the neighborhood store presented $2,000 checks to both Belvidere Elementary School and the Martin City K-8 School! Principal Liz Means of Belvidere, and Assistant Principal Jacqueline Spencer and Marci Simon of Martin City accepted the checks on behalf of the schools.

“The students of Martin City will greatly benefit from this generous donation, which will ensure supplies will be available in their classes,” said Martin City Principal Johnny Dodge. The schools were chosen based on needs and because the schools are in the same neighborhood as the new store.

If you are not familiar with Big Lots, the retail store offers a broad assortment of merchandise, including consumables, seasonal products, furniture, housewares, toys and gifts. In late spring of 2015, they leased 30,000 square feet if space in the State Line Point Shopping Center (13601-13657 Washington Street) and officially took occupancy in June 2015.

Big Lots, Inc. is headquartered in Columbus, Ohio and shares are traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol BIG. Their incredible growth has made them the nation’s largest broad-line closeout retailer, with annual revenues approaching $5 billion. Big Lots operates more than 1,400 retail stores serving 48 states. Brand-name products from 3,000 manufacturers are supplied to stores through five regional distribution centers with more than 9 million square feet of distribution capacity.

We are excited to have them open a store in Martin City and appreciate their willingness to support our community!
