Every two years, the Outstanding Mechanical Installation (OMI) awards recognize outstanding national projects nominated by the industry. This past July, our own MMC Contractors, a local construction company that specializes in large, complex mechanical projects, received not one, but two awards for their work on the Truman Medical Center East project and the Little Blue Valley Sewer District Wastewater Treatment Plant projects. Both projects were completed between 2013-2014.

The award for the Truman Medical Center Lakewood Campus Chiller and Boiler Plant Replacement was given to both MMC Contractors and Burns & McDonnell, who partnered together to complete the project. The project design included a new 1,200-ton chiller plant adjacent to the existing facility and the design of three new 300-BHP steam boilers within the existing facility.

The total chiller capacity of 1,200 tons is provided by two 600-ton chillers in a variable-primary configuration. The primary goal for TMC was to significantly increase reliability and efficiency for the thermal loads of the hospital. The chiller plant was designed to replace an aging air-cooled chilled water system.

The second award was for the Little Blue Valley Sewer District Wastewater Treatment Plant, where the MMC Contractors team was responsible for all of the above ground process piping, equipment setting, HVAC and plumbing for the Phase II improvements at LBVSD Atherton WWTP. The project consisted of installing a new sludge incinerator, scrubber, and process heat exchangers. This was an interesting project for MMC Contractors because they don’t often have the opportunity to design the equipment layout themselves.

The project won a 2013-2014 Outstanding Mechanical Installation (OMI) Award for Plumbing over $3 million.

The OMI awards have recognized the best in organized construction in the Kansas City area for 78 years. The recipients of this award must possess a great standard of excellence performed by both union mechanical contractors and their labor teammates.Find all recipients of this year’s OMI awards here.
