Rooms That Bloom Celebrates 29 Years in Business!

In March of 1989, Rooms that Bloom, opened their doors in Martin City in a 100-year old cottage that was once occupied by a railroad foreman. Owner Krista Sloan’s vision was to turn the old house into a shopping experience where people could find unique European items in each room of the house. Take a look at their original grand opening invitation!

“I always wanted to grow the business in a real house because it’s easier for people to visualize what products will look like in their own homes,” said Sloan. “The opportunity to buy this old railroad home just happened to fall in my lap when I was driving by and saw a for sale sign. It was like a dream come true right in front of me.”

Sloan completely renovated the old railroad cottage inside and out and now combs the English countryside twice a year to find one-of-a-kind items to fill the house.

Her first trip was in 1994, and she’s been back over 40 times since then! Sloan said she and her husband spend 10 days in the summer driving around England visiting a variety of antique stores to find the best deals.

“We want to find things no one else has,” said Sloan. “We have discerning customers who like unique, quality products and they come to us because they know they won’t find them in big box retail stores.”

Sloan said she always brings back more than enough items to fill the main house so they opened what’s called The ‘Bloomin’ Cottage’ in the back to hold overflow items and new product shipments. Visitors are free to shop in the Bloomin Cottage just like in the main house!

Sloan has seen many changes happening in Martin City, especially over the last five years. “The 135th Street improvement project almost forced me to close my doors because it was so difficult for customers to access the store,” she said.

“The street looked like a war zone because everything was torn apart. It was terrible for a while but really worth it in the end,” said Sloan. “And the new sidewalks and hanging baskets have added so much character and charm to the outside of our cottage! We love our location in Martin City even more than we did before and we’re excited by all the businesses around us making improvements too.”
