Jess and Jim’s Steakhouse is a one-of-a-kind legend, pure and simple, from the steer that sits atop the landmark building, all the way down to the homemade pies. It’s been ranked by numerous critics as one of the best family-owned steakhouses in the United States. Their menu features fresh cut steaks for all appetites and price ranges. “This is the old school kind of joint your grandfather may have gone to.” – Yahoo Food
Founded by best friends Jess Kincaid and Jim Wright, the original small bar and grill opened in Martin City way back in 1938 and grew into a cornerstone of our historic community. Jess eventually sold his share of the business to Jim and moved on, but Jim kept the name “Jess & Jim’s Steakhouse” as a lasting reminder of his friend’s contributions. In 1949, Jim hired his cousin, R.C. Van Noy, to lend a hand. R.C. went on to build the restaurant’s modern steakhouse fame, and it’s remained in the family ever since.
In 1972, acclaimed journalist Calvin Trillin wrote about Jess & Jim’s in an article published in Playboy Magazine. Trillin called Jess & Jim’s “the finest steak restaurant in the world.” The restaurant now offers the famous “KC Playboy Strip” in honor of the review in Playboy that introduced Jess and Jim’s Steakhouse to the world.
