Santa Claus and his Cyber Sleigh stopped in Martin City to lend a hand at the first Annual Martin City Holiday Lighting Ceremony. Friday evening, November 21st, Martin City residents, employees, employers, and Martin City Elementary students gathered on the new sidewalks of Martin City to create new memories and hopefully, new traditions, at the first annual holiday lighting event.
The Martin City Elementary Choir and DJ-Sterling Williams entertained the community with festive holiday caroling prior to Santa’s arrival. Promptly at 6:00 p.m. Santa came down 135th Street making a grand entrance on his Cyber Sleigh. In addition to flipping the switch on the holiday lights at the Bailey Brother Bank Building, Santa and one of his helpful elves took a seat on the front porch of the Bank to visit with the boys and girls. The kids were so excited and more than happy to share their wish lists with Santa!
While the children chatted with Santa, the adults visited local businesses, purchased hot chocolate from the Detroit Coney Food Truck, and tried their luck in winning gifts from several Martin City businesses. Individuals of all ages tested their knowledge of Martin City by completing the 12 Days of Christmas in Martin City trivia raffle. Winners of the raffle took home wonderful prizes, such as a gift certificate for a car detail from Premier Mazda, a generous gift certificate from Let’s Face It, a Farmland Foods Ham, holiday decorations or holiday arrangements, and various restaurant gift cards. Everyone who participated received a “Shop South KC” shopping bag from the South Kansas City Chamber of Commerce.
The holiday giving spirit began well before the evening of the Holiday Lighting Ceremony with the help of seven different Martin City businesses. These businesses displayed containers to collect items for the Grandview Assistance Program’s (GAP) Food Pantry between November 18th and November 25th. The items collected will help GAP restock their food pantry. Grandview Assistance Program’s mission is to assist in a dignified manner, families and individuals in Grandview and the Grandview School District, with emergency assistance and guidance toward ultimate self-sufficiency.
