Smithfield Foods is the world’s largest pork processor and their spiral and smoked ham plant has been open in Martin City since 1972 under the brand name, Farmland Foods. In 2015, Smithfield Foods combined all their independent brands under one corporate umbrella and they are now known as “One Smithfield.”

Three shifts of packaging operations are in full swing 24 hours a day inside Smithfield’s 100,000 square foot facility in Martin City. ​This location employs almost 400 employees represented by United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) District Union Local 2. ​More than 60% are fluent in Spanish and English. Supervisors are the heart of the plant and they work hard every day to make sure everything runs smoothly. Brent Vernon is the Martin City Plant Manager and has been with the company for over 35 years.
