We are proud to announce the Economic Development Corporation of Kansas City Missouri has named the Martin City Community Improvement District’s 135th Street Public Improvement Project as a Cornerstone Award finalist! This is the first time in the 27 year history of the Cornerstone Awards that an entire group of businesses has been named as a finalist.

The Cornerstone Award celebrates and recognizes businesses in Kansas City, Missouri who have made a significant impact on our local economy and we are excited to see our efforts have been noticed.

Martin City is often forgotten because we are so far south, removed from all the exciting news of downtown KCMO. However, this new finalist nomination reminds us of just how many of our businesses have also been nominated for the prestigious award in years past:

  • 135th Street Public Improvement Project
  • Bambini Creativi
  • Grade A Tree Care
  • Hanger Cleaners
  • Infinite Energy Construction (2013 winner)
  • Margarita’s South Restaurant
  • Martin City Brewing Company
  • Martin City Sports Complex
  • MMC Contractors
  • Suburban Lawn and Garden (1992 and 2003 winners)

Martin City has continued to stay true to our core values of supporting local businesses and growing our district. We welcome others who are looking to become part of our family!

In January 2013, Honeywell successfully moved the National Security Campus to a new $687 million complex at 14520 Botts Road in Kansas City, Missouri, just five minutes away from Martin City. The impact of that move on Martin City businesses has been phenomenal and we feel lucky to be located in a place where those who sell to nearby manufacturers want to be.

We are also excited about the new FishTech Labs Demonstration Facility moving into the district! This new 20,000-sq-ft building is planned for 13333 Holmes Road (between Margaritas and Volleyball Beach) in a new highly energy-efficient building. Expected development costs for this project include $8 million in construction and the new facility will be staffed by 48 employees with an average annual salary of $119,000.

We are definitely making progress but our work is not finished! In the next few years, the CID hopes to finish the 135th street project, find new owners and/or tenants for some of our vacant properties and office spaces, and as always, we will continue to work with local businesses who want to be part of our district.

This award nomination is an honor and we could not have achieved it without all of our CID businesses stepping up to make investments in our district. Thank you!
