Few people realize it, but Martin City is quickly becoming a hub for sports enthusiasts in Kansas City. A cornerstone of the MC sports movement is the Martin City Sports Complex, owned by Robin Nigro.
Nigro is a former professional golfer who qualified for the Women’s US Open in 1993, and now dedicates herself to helping golfers improve their game at the Robin Nigro Golf Academy. Nigro and her husband, Mark, purchased the location at 135th & Wornall in 2010 in order to create a premiere golf academy.
“Other places are more of a ‘bowling alley’ or entertainment operation with limited golf,” says Mark Nigro, co-owner of the Sports Complex. “Our focus is all about getting better at playing the game of golf.”
The Sports Complex hasn’t lost their competitive advantage
Nigro says his complex has a different focus than other facilities in the area.
We know places like Top Golf have moved to town and we have no problem with that. We know the Martin City Sports Complex is where the professional golfers, and those aspiring to be golf professionals, come out to practice so it’s more for the serious minded player.
The Double Deck heated and covered tee area allows serious golfers to practice year-round, rain or shine. PowerTees are a unique feature that tees the ball up automatically, causing less stress and saving you time.
Besides lessons, the complex also sells, fits and repairs equipment.

Community Involvement
“Martin City is best known for its restaurants and entertainment and I believe we are a big part of that,” says Nigro. “Our focus is on helping the golfers but we also want to help the families of those golfers who are looking for inexpensive entertainment.”
In addition to professional golf lessons and practice, the Martin City Sports Complex also offers miniature golf for families of all ages and skill levels to enjoy.
Helping Martin City grow is a personal mission for Nigro. He is an original board member on the Martin City Community Improvement District’s board of directors and takes pride in having his business located here.
“Martin City is really a neat community,” says Nigro. “We are all family businesses here. You don’t see a bunch of franchises and that makes us unique.”
Planning for the Future
We know the Martin City district is growing quickly and Nigro is excited to be a part of it.
“We own additional property in Martin City and would like to see that developed sometime in the future,” says Nigro. Current plans for the Sports Complex include the addition of a new bar and grill and a fitness and nutrition center. “We hope to see that project begin sometime next year.”
