What is Small Business Saturday?

It’s the one day each year when individuals are encouraged to shop local to support small business owners. American Express founded Small Business Saturday in 2010 to help businesses with their most pressing need — more customers walking through their doors.  Black Friday and the day after Thanksgiving typically cater to the big-box retailers with thousands of stores so Small Business Saturday celebrates the local businesses that create jobs, support our communities and help grow our neighborhoods.

More than 9 in 10 small-business owners nationally give back to their communities in some way, be it working with nonprofits, coaching youth sports teams or volunteering to sit on boards and committees that work to bring positive change. Small Business Saturday is a buying-local concept where the circle of money stays in the community – at least for one day.

The movement has gained momentum through the use of social media and businesses and shoppers are encouraged to tweet using the hashtags #SmallBizSat and #ShopSmall.  The Small Business Saturday Facebook page has more than 3.3 million likes and continues to gain momentum.

“For a community to really survive and grow, we need all the businesses to do well,” said Martin City CID’s Executive Director.  “We want to raise awareness of every business that’s in Martin City and Small Business Saturday gives us a much bigger opportunity to do that than we would have on our own.”

This year, Small Business Saturday is on November 29th and since Martin City is full of local businesses, it’s the perfect place to spend the day! If you are a business in Martin City, there are FREE marketing materials available to you! You can personalize these marketing materials to promote your business for Small Business Saturday even if you don’t accept American Express Cards. View marketing materials here.

Charm will be open on this one and only Saturday in November so make sure to stop by and say hello. For a complete listing of all the businesses in Martin City, please click here.
