Honorable Mention

If you haven’t heard of Derek Mitchell , he’s a local runner who started running one 5K a month in 2015 to work towards a healthier life. Over five years ago, Derek was diagnosed with a prolactinoma, which is a benign tumor on his pituitary gland that blocks testosterone production and secretes prolactin, which largely contributed to his weight gain. He now takes medication to help shrink the tumor, and as a result, his prolactin levels are starting to normalize. He has also started testosterone replacement therapy.

Weighing in around 625 lbs, at age 34, Derek decided to make a life change and lose weight. He started making healthier food choices but realized food alone will not do the trick, so he started walking. In an effort to give himself a goal in his walking, he completed one 5K a month in 2015, and now has the goal of completing 30 5K’s in 2016!

We are so honored you chose the Whiskey Run 5K as one of your races, Derek! Good luck and we hope to see you again next year!

All the race participants received a free post-race brunch from RC’s Restaurant in the event tent across from RC’s to accommodate the increase in registered runners this year. Chicken and waffles, biscuits and gravy, pancakes, eggs, bacon, sausage…. AND athletes. Definitely a breakfast for champions. The Whiskey Run race winners received their awards during breakfast.
