6th In –District City Council Candidates:
Due to term limits, on June 23rd, voters in the six district will cast a vote for an individual to replace John Sharp as the 6th In-District City Council member. The two gentlemen running for the seat are Kevin McManus and Terrence Nash. Here is some background on both candidates.
A fifth generation Kansas Citian, Kevin McManus represents the 36th District in the Missouri House of Representatives, which encompasses south Kansas City, Missouri. In 2010, Kevin was elected as a first-time candidate through an aggressive grassroots campaign and was re-elected in 2012 and 2014. At home, Kevin has been active in the South Kansas City Alliance. He serves as co-chair of the SKC Alliance’s Strategic Planning Committee and has helped lead the group’s effort to define priorities and strategies for improving the quality of life in south Kansas City for future generations.
In addition to his legislative duties, Kevin is an attorney in private practice focused on business law and civil litigation in state and federal court. He is a member of the Metropolitan Bar Association, as well as the Missouri and Kansas Bars. In 2012, the Missouri Bar awarded Kevin a legislative award for his work to improve the administration of justice in the state of Missouri. Kevin, a Rockhurst High School graduate, resides in south Kansas City with his wife Alejandra (“Alex”) and their son.
Terrence Nash has spent the last 40 years in the 6th District having grown up in Stratford Estates near Hillcrest Road. Terrence attended C.A. Burke Elementary School and Baptiste Junior High in the Hickman Mills School District and graduated from Rockhurst High School. After high school he attended Longview Community College. Working as a plumber through Plumber’s Local Union # 8, he continued his education at the University of Central Missouri receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business with a major in Accounting.
Since then, Terrence has worked for both large and small companies as an accountant, auditor, and controller. Using his accounting skills, Terrence has studied the City budget extensively for several years. A longtime member of the St. Thomas More Parish and the Knights of Columbus, Terrence now also serves as a member of the South Kansas City Alliance, and the Southern Communities Coalition. He has been involved in several organizations for the defense of neighborhoods including the Center Planning and Development Council, Save Richards-Gebaur, Taxpayers Against Bi-State II, the Neighborhood Action Group, Friends of Red Bridge, and Citizens Against Billboard Blight.
