The Martin City Community Improvement District pays Orion Security Solutions to provide overnight patrols that help local businesses stay secure after hours. Orion’s been on the job in our neighborhood for years, watching for signs of trouble and promptly notifying business owners, police, and firefighters as necessary.

At a recent meeting of the Martin City Community Improvement District, Orion officers offered tips to help businesses respond to trends and conditions now being observed in our area.

1. Secure Your Property Overnight

Orion’s officers routinely see it: unlocked gates, open doors, and unexpected activity on business properties in the middle of the night. If you have employees, contractors, or deliveries coming after hours, Orion recommends giving them a heads-up. A quick email or call to their 24-hour security line helps avoid confusion.

“It happens more than you might assume,” one officer told the CID Board. “Gates wide open, lights left on, doors not secured. That’s all it takes for someone with bad intentions to decide your place is an easy target.”

2. Watch Out for Open Wi-Fi

If your business offers free Wi-Fi, be sure it’s password protected. Open Wi-Fi can attract individuals, loitering on your property, to use your internet. Some even plug in devices to charge, turning a quick stop into an all-night stay.

“Next thing you know, you’ve got a group leaning against your building, eating dinner, charging their phones, and using your network to make calls. They’re not being aggressive, but they’re definitely not your customers,” the officer added.

3. Keep an Eye on the Back Lot

One issue Orion continues to monitor is unmarked vehicles roaming the area overnight. Lately, officers have spotted trucks with no license plates following a repeat route. The intent of the drivers is often unclear, but it’s something to be aware of, especially if you store materials or equipment outdoors.

4. Don’t Let Donation Bins Become a Draw for Crime

We all love the idea of giving back, but unmonitored charity donation bins can become magnets for theft and loitering. Some are pried open and rummaged through. Others become makeshift shelters or drop points for unwanted trash.

“We’ve seen people knock them over and pull everything out piece by piece. It’s not just a mess. It creates a draw for the wrong kind of crowd,” the officer explained.

If you host a bin, work with a group that maintains it regularly. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kansas City, for example, is one organization known for managing their bins well.

5. Electrical Access is a Bigger Problem Than You Think

Some trespassers go beyond plugging into outdoor outlets. Orion has seen people unscrew light pole plates and tap directly into electrical lines. It’s risky and expensive for business owners.

Regularly check your property for signs of tampering around outlets, poles, and other access points. It’s a simple way to stay ahead of potential damage or safety hazards.

6. If You See Something, Say Something

Orion emphasized the importance of communication. If you see suspicious activity such as lingering individuals, strange vehicles, or signs of a break-in, please report it immediately. Your tip could be the piece of information they need to prevent a bigger problem.

Martin City’s Security Advantage

Compared to other parts of Kansas City, Martin City has fewer crime issues right now. That’s no accident. It’s the result of years of work from Orion and the diligent business owners they serve.

“I’ve worked other parts of Kansas City. The Martin City neighborhood isn’t perfect, but it’s certainly different. There’s pride here. People look out for each other,” the officer emphasized. “It makes a huge difference.”

Lines of communication are critical. Business owners must complete a basic form to ensure quick contact if Orion needs to get in touch with you immediately. Please take a moment to fill it out.

By staying alert, sharing information, and taking a few proactive steps, we can keep Martin City safe, welcoming, and thriving.

Thank you, Orion Security, for all you do to protect our businesses every night.
