Festive Idea Sweetens The Neighborhood’s Reputation as a Seasonal Destination.
Great food and unique gifts always make Martin City popular during the holiday season, and this year, there’s an exciting new reason to pay us a visit. Santa’s Bakeshop is a pop-up fantasyland you don’t want to miss, and a dream come true for creator Lynne Pierce. “Christmas is absolutely the best! I’m one of those people who can’t get enough of it. You can never have too much Christmas and now we have a little more in Martin City.”
Pierce is the Creative Director at Martin City Brewing Company. When owner Matt Moore turned her loose to transform the old automotive building he owns across the street, it was a gift she couldn’t wait to open. Since then, she’s been working hard as an elf with the help of General Manager T.J. Carr and other members of the MCBC team.
“Matt is so good to us,” says Pierce. “He supports the things his employees are passionate about. He could see I’m a fanatic about all things Christmas and believed I could make something special for the holidays in the heart of Martin City.”
Well, just look around! Before you step off the sidewalk at 411 East 135th Street, you can already feel the Christmas spirit streaming from the Bakeshop. Whimsical signs point you toward oversized bursts of holiday decorations complete with a life-size Grinch and a stand-alone snowman. Animated lights steal the show after dark and flurries of bubbles swirl around like December snowflakes every half hour they are open.
And right in the middle of it all is a sleigh. “Oh, you have to take a picture sitting in the sleigh,” says Pierce, showing off the wooden spectacle she decorated herself. “After all, this is Santa’s Bakeshop. Social distancing won’t allow Santa himself to hang around, but he’s left behind plenty of his favorite things.” It’s true, parents will find a picture-taking paradise. If you have little ones at home, this is the perfect place to snap a holiday photo and preserve a one-of-a-kind winter wonderland memory in Martin City.
This special holiday oasis is nothing like the cookie-cutter pop-up stores you may have seen in shopping malls. It’s all personally hand-crafted by Pierce and uniquely made just for Martin City. The concept, layout, art, and festive feeling are all original. Santa’s Bakeshop is a labor of love sprinkled with years of creative training visible in every detail. Pierce is a professional designer with experience in advertising and quite a track record cheering the holiday season.
“I never miss holiday attractions around Kansas City. I’ll go two or three times if I can. But I’m often a little disappointed because few attractions offer a complete experience. There may be lights, but no hot chocolate. Or cookies, but no music. I wanted Santa’s Bakeshop to be different. It’s small but vibrant with a fantasy fiction style and all the right ingredients for a complete holiday feeling.”
Step inside and immediately feel the warmth of an atmosphere filled with Christmas music and looping holiday movies on the wall. Stockings are hung by the chimney with care and strings of lights twinkling above reflect a beautiful glare.
True to its name, Santa’s Bakeshop is a bakery, offering three kinds of fresh-baked Christmas cookies each day. They also serve holiday-inspired ice cream flavors from The Scoop in Martin City, as well as hot chocolate with your choice of marshmallows, whipped cream, or a candy cane on top. Pierce says everything has a homemade taste. “It’s all local, local, local. Nothing but authentic holiday treats.”
Available merchandise is local too. Holiday t-shirts, sweatshirts, beer glasses, and mugs were created and printed by Kansas City area vendors. Even the lights came from right around the corner at Animated Lighting in Martin City.
Want to help a local food pantry while you’re at Santa’s Bakeshop? Purchase a premium $20 BOB tote bag because all profits from tote bag sales go to local food pantries in Kansas City! “The charitable bags could be a really creative and thoughtful way to package holiday gifts,” says Pierce.
Put it all together and you’ve got a very compelling reason to emerge from your pandemic exhaustion and visit Martin City! Whether it’s a day out with the family, a Secret Santa shopping trip, or a festive holiday date night, Santa’s Bakeshop offers people of all ages the opportunity to make memories in Martin City.
“it’s hard to beat the quaint and casual hometown appeal of Martin City at Christmastime,” says Pierce. “And Santa’s Bakeshop is the icing on the cake … or the cookie, actually.”
Next time you’re shopping or dining in Martin City, we encourage you to stop by and support this local creative small business. You don’t need a ticket or reservations to get inside and there’s plenty of socially distanced seating available on their heated outdoor patio.
